It had been about ten years since I’d been to The Shack at Currumbin, and frankly I was gobsmacked by the change. The bustling busy shanty overlooking the beach had been replaced by a sparkling fresh two storied building, opening out to the amazing vista of sand and surf. The décor is casually elegant: white shutters, timber and pebble feature floor, with a choice of outdoor and indoor seating. The interior of the restaurant features a luminous fish tank which reminds us that, even there, the sea is not far away.
Bought several years ago by Sue and Dean Olarenshaw, the physical transformation of The Beachshack has been reflected in its metamorphosis from breakfast café to restaurant and function venue. Breakfasts are still hugely popular, the lure of dining by the ocean too big a drawcard to forego, however the hours have been extended to cover dinner from Friday to Sunday evenings, and a tapas menu has been added to the dining options. Being one of few ocean view Gold Coast restaurants available for hire, The Beach Shack is popular for weddings and special events. On some occasions, there’s also live music.
On the night we dined, there was a wedding in the top level of the restaurant (their booking was made after ours), nevertheless a table had been set for us. As the restaurant was busy, a plate of garlic bread was sent ‘on the house’ to ease the waiting time. In fact, our meals were promptly served and we enjoyed friendly, obliging service despite wait staff being busy with the event upstairs. The Eye fillet was the dish of the night, with prawns piled high on top of a tender generously sized steak. The Grilled Barramundi and Lamb salads were also vibrant and fresh, fitting the beachside venue.
We had read a lot of conflicting comments about diners’ experiences at The Beachshack, so we were pleased to enjoy a great meal there. This is a venue with wonderful facilities and an incredible ocean outlook. In a tight economic climate, so much depends on word of mouth, with savvy customers checking online menus and reviews. If in doubt, sometimes they go elsewhere. In the end, any dining experience is about clientele establishing a bond with the staff and the meal they are served, as we did, bringing conviviality to the table. The ambience, or in this case the view, only helps.
