Finding it hard to get a good coffee in the Big Smoke? Then look for Rowan Atkinson.
Well not literally, but standing outside Lot 1 Coffee in Hanlan Street, Surfers Paradise, is a statue that really looks like the great comedian. We’re only a street away from Cavill Avenue, but it’s quiet enough here to really enjoy a decent lunch break!
The Atkinson family (yes, you did hear right) run Lot 1. It can be difficult to get good home-baked food and good service in town, but Sharon and Gary’s friendly, efficient service brings return customers. This is a place for some decent nosh at the right price and a smooth, full-bodied Veneziano coffee.
The menu is full of simple, flavoursome dishes: eggs, porridge, fruit salad and French Toast options for breakfast; Gourmet sandwiches, burgers, wraps and salads for lunch. That’s what the menu indicates: lots of standards, but the reality is better than you’d expect and there are some unexpected twists. It’s not plain porridge, but Quinoa, barley and rolled oats with raw nuts, strawberries, and dark Muscovado natural sugar ($8), the Big Brekkie is $10, the sauces and cakes are homemade and my Chicken salad for lunch has a lemongrass, sweet chilli and kaffir lime dressing. Yum! As is the Red velvet slice I devour as a chaser!
Sharon is Singaporean (notice the Spicy fried chicken noodles as Asian greens on the menu), and if you ask nicely she can ramp up the heat for you. That is, if you’re game!
With an affordable, healthy all day breakfast and lunch menu, smoothies and fresh juices, whole leaf tea and one of the best coffees in town, Lot 1 is a neat little funky food stop. There aren’t many like it. Just look for Rowan!
