With the demise of many delicatessens, it’s sometimes difficult to source specialty imported ingredients, and that’s where the knowledge of providores can be important. Established in 1957, the family-run Global Food & Wine is one of the main Gold Coast distributors of specialty cheeses, continental produce and meats and Italian wine. Although primarily a wholesaler to restaurants and hotels, Global will accept passing trade with a minimum purchase of $100 and/or minimum wine purchase of 9 litres (12 bottles).
Step inside the warehouse doors and you are confronted with shelves of ingredients – kilo bags of pinenuts, large sacks of flour, large tins and jars of Raciti tomato products, Pronto Fresco artichokes (stems included) – but it’s inside the refrigerated rooms that the real joy begins. It’s the range of Danish and Italian cheeses that’s astounding – huge rounds and pieces of pecorino, provolone dulce, jarlsberg, gouda, gorgonzola, edam, logs of dutch smoked cheese and ricotta in baskets. Another coolroom holds more delights: Papa Rodolfo, Birgo and Bertocchi salami, cured meat and parma ham. Global Food also distributes a large range of Angelo’s frozen pasta – tortellini, ravioli and cannelloni – hard to source outside their almost local makers at Fortitude Valley, especially at wholesale prices. Frankly, I’d have no trouble at all spending my $100!
