Coffee in a box?
Well, not really. The container is rectangular.
Of course I’m talking in riddles, as by now you’ll have guessed that I’m talking Box Coffee Co. Not to be confused with Box Espresso (Broadbeach) this ‘espresso box’ is perched on the edge of Southport Sharks’ property on Melia Court.
With the obvious intention of being noticed, Box operates from a converted shipping container whose history stretches ‘across the seas to far flung places, filled with the hopes and dreams of many’. It’s landed on the edge of the carpark, gained a dramatic makeover from Gold Coast graffiti artist John Kaye. Hard to miss!
With flipsides of colour and grey, the box is art installation, roadside stop and café rolled into one. Step around to the far side and we’re outside a tiny espresso bar being greeted by Tanille and Lisa, upbeat and very helpful despite the searing heat. When the summer sun cools, we’ll take more notice of the stools and tables around the verges.
It’s mainly a drinks joint serving Brood Cold Pressed coffee (made by Sharks), three varieties of organic iced tea (including an Apple Rooibos), Pearl Royal coconut water Noah’s juice and StrangeLove soft drink.
Slept in? You can grab a little treat to go with your drink, with muffins, protein balls and apples on offer – enough to see you through your walk to uni or work.
And the coffee? It’s one of our faves – Byron Bay’s Bun organic coffee – velvety smooth and full-bodied with a caramel finish. Yes, it is from a box, but served in a cup, and well worth stopping for if you’re near Olsen Ave.
Would they deliver when I’m ‘parked’ in the roadworks, I wonder? Mmm…
