Yummy Dumplings

They’ve been around since the Sung Dynasty; they’ve travelled through Asia and across the seas to Australia. To the Chinese they’re jiaozi (Mandarin) or gow gee (Cantonese); to Japanese, gyoza.

Steamed, fried or boiled, served in bamboo baskets or on a plate, dumplings are in hot demand in most Australian cities, a late night snack or quick cheap meal for those on the move. But it’s a battle which is yet to hit the Gold Coast in earnest.  There’s only a scattering of these delicious little pillows on offer, mostly at established restaurants. And they’re not always freshly made. Some of our freshest dumplings are available at market stalls, from specialty chefs who make these two bite wonders from scratch!

But where can you buy good dumplings when the urge hits midweek? Or when you need a faster, more informal (or even ‘at home’) alternative?

Yummy Dumplings in Robina is part of our answer.

Yummy Dumplings 2 It’s a humble little restaurant in the middle of a fast food precinct opposite Robina Town Centre. Although there’s a far wider menu on offer ($9 – $14), we’ve been recommended the dumplings because owners Peter and Cindy make them by hand.

They’re traditional dumplings, the sort eaten in Southern China on Chinese New Year and special family occasions. Their thin, almost elastic skins yield at the first bite, and moist tasty meat centres disappear all too quickly. Filled with pork and vegetables (Chinese cabbage, carrot, pumpkin or celery), Beef with cabbage, or Chicken with prawn and mushroom, 10 dumplings cost $10 ($15 for the chicken and prawn) – a bargain! In any capital city you’d pay twice the price!

Yummy Dumplings 2B There’s not a huge range to choose from, the surroundings are not luxurious or even atmospheric, but the restaurant is clean and you’ll be welcomed with a shy smile.

Yummy Dumplings 3We chose a mixed dozen, pan-fried for $14 and a dozen steamed Chicken dumplings for $15 to share. Dipped in a sauce of vinegar and chilli oil with some soy sauce added, we easily polished them off between two of us, both steamed and pan-fried delicious. It was a feast! Lip smackingly good!

In fact, we enjoyed them so much that we bought a packet of frozen dumplings to take away ($8 for 10). They made a perfect midweek dinner, cooked according to Peter’s instructions:

1. Boil water.
2. Put frozen dumplings into boiling water.
3. Put the lid on and boil about 6-8 minutes.
4. Once the dumplings rise to the water surface, turn off fire and leave for one more minute.
5. Dumplings are ready to eat. Serve with your desired sauce and enjoy!

Yummy dumplings 1Freshly made. Inexpensive. Really easy to cook (foolproof, we’d say). Taste great. We’ll be back for more! Yummy dumplings!
