Vintage Espresso, Mermaid Beach

Vintage Espresso is really just that in Gold Coast coffee history – vintage royalty. Originally opened seven years ago by Andrew and Jodie Whiting (now owners of Elk and Sparrow), it was one of the first cafés to serve up a decent cup of coffee. It’s been owned by Chantelle and Brian Steele for over two years now, but it’s still the tucked-around-the-corner place we know and love.

If you didn’t know the café existed, you could easily whiz by on the nearby highway. However if you turned into the street and saw the tiny shopfront, you’d immediately be intrigued. Through the huge front windows you get its 70s vibe, wooden wall cubes above the kitchen door filled with assorted knick knacks, a large mirror bringing in more light from the street, the timber furniture well-loved but comfortable enough chairs to sit for a while gazing out to the street. It’s light and airy, fairly spartan but with a comfortable homey sort of ambience. Nothing to turn your head, really.

So, what draws the crowd?

Once voted ‘Best coffee on the coast’, many locals would tell you that Vintage Espresso still produces their favourite cup of joe. It’s the single most drawing factor for Vintage when there’s so much competition out there.

‘Is the coffee really that good?’ we hear you ask.

It’s a ‘Yes’ from us. Serving their own Vintage house blend of coffee from Paradox Coffee Roasters, our cup is a smooth, chocolatey brew with notes of berry and caramel. Mild but with full-bodied lingering flavour, it’s worth travelling for.

Of course, any good café holds more than one selling point, Vintage included. The chilled out vibe, cordial welcome when we enter, 7-day opening hours and easy parking are all a plus.

The food at Vintage Espresso matches the ambience. It’s fresh and light with a healthy emphasis, all made on site. The all day menu covers everything from food from the cabinet to go, such as wraps, to house-made Bircher muesli with fresh berries and Greek yoghurt, eggs in lots of ways, pancakes, burgers, rainbow bowls, burritos and more. Counter top muffins and cakes would make a neat grab with a coffee, and there’s a specials board to maintain extra interest for locals. Prices are reasonable, all well under $20.

We dine at lunch, having no trouble finding standouts besides Eggs bene and Smashed avo. The Main Squeeze chooses a Slow-roasted BBQ pulled pork burger. Served on brioche with house slaw and Swiss cheese, the pork is luscious – ‘A great burger’ he manages to blurt out between mouthfuls, staving off my attempt to grab a chip.

I’m going healthy, a Rainbow bowl of all the vegies: sautéed kale, asparagus, green beans, roast pumpkin, red cabbage and cherry tomatoes, it’s topped with an optional pair of black sesame-rolled poached eggs, surprisingly very filling. I’m washing it down with a Rise and Shine freshly squeezed juice, its pineapple, orange and ginger full of zing to brighten up the day.

Vintage is a tiny shop, pushing to seat thirty inside and out on the pavement, with counter orders only. Success means that at times locals have to queue for their coffee orders. Perhaps that’s why when we visited on a weekday the regulars were making the most of the cool peaceful space to hang out, having a quiet coffee, reading the paper or chatting to friends.

It’s as though time has stood still in this quaint little shop tucked away from the bustle of passing traffic. So stop, relax, and enjoy some time out at Vintage Espresso. Quietly, nothing too fancy, just doing their thing, Vintage is still producing the goods!
