Tonic on Chirn, Labrador

You could be mistaken for thinking that you were in an ultra upmarket warehouse development in Flinders Lane or Docklands, Melbourne, a laneway off Argyle Street, The Rocks or even on the latest TV set of some funky bar. But no, this is Chirn Park, and Tonic is the place to be!

Tonic 15B Tonic on Chirn is a showcase for the design talent of local shopfitters Alex Toohmy and Kane McCarthy. The previous shop space has been transformed, Cinderella-like, into a retro industrial space which looks invitingly dark and cool in the daytime, flame-lit and sexy at night. The style elements include pressed metal sheeting on the bar wall and ceiling offering up muted reflections of coloured lighting, pallets and crates at head height used for wine storage, a full stainless steel kitchen hiding cave-like behind hand cut and grouted bricks, concrete render transformed into artwork, and wood from the Old Southport Pier, which now forms one of the restaurant’s main features – the bar.

Tonic 12B This is an establishment where food, drink, ambience and service are equally important. Tonic is fully licensed, with a great choice of boutique wines, cider, cocktails and imported longneck beer. The tapas menu complements the venue perfectly, with an emphasis on fresh local produce, an accessible menu which reflects the colours of mixed ethnic heritage and skilful food combinations. Dips with rosemary infused bread ($9) sourced from the bakery next door, Grilled haloumi with crunchy asparagus spears and drizzled vino cotto, Lamb cutlets with mango chutney and raita, Peking duck pancakes with smoked mozzarella, coriander and hoisin (all $14), Crab cakes with wasabi and soya mayonnaise ($16) – all absolutely delicious! The tapas dishes, delivered at intervals, are ideal to share as you linger over drinks.

Tonic 10 It’s Thursday night and there’s an assortment people who have wandered in to meet friends and are staying on, comfortable and chilled. Perfect ambience for a date!  The place is full, with a quietly chatty vibe. The Maitre d’, Todd, is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. As casual as this place appears, there’s a seamless rollout of food and the unobtrusive service only gained from years in the industry. Friday nights really buzz, and there’s live music on the weekends as well as special events.

Tonic on Chirn is a real find which local residents would probably prefer we didn’t know about! There’s been no pub, no communal meeting place in Chirn Park, until now. With a well-priced happy hour, locals have given Tonic a stamp of approval, voted with their feet and made this place their own.
