Nozomi Japanese Restaurant

Nozomi Japanese Restaurant is a bit of a gem in a suburb not renowned for its cuisine.  Just because many students choose to eat and play closer to the coast doesn’t mean that locals should miss out on great affordable dining!

Although the restaurant is small, they’ve made the most of the space, closing in the under roof verandah with plastic blinds. A timber-tiled floor and warehouse lighting add to the ambience, with very welcoming service a real bonus! We’re made to feel right at home.

Nozomi 3 We could dine all night from the Izakaya menu, Japanese bar snacks to accompany our drinks, tempura and sashimi. Nozomi’s menu contains lots of favourites around the $6 – $12 mark: Agedashi tofu, Crumbed scallops, Chicken Karaage, Prawn Gyoza… the list goes on.

Nozomi 2 We snack on Shumai (Prawn balls $4.80) and a plate of really fresh Sashimi, then make the decision to try a main meal each. There’s a choice of meat prepared in Teriyaki, Katsu, Ponzu or Miso style ($16 – $25) or you can choose a Don (on rice) for under $20. While we enjoyed the Teriyaki Fish, served with side salad ($19.60), it was probably basa and, for us, not the wisest choice. Our Pork Ponzu was the dish of the night – succulent and tender.  We’ll go back next time and order steak or eat a meal of tapas, Japanese style!

Nozomi 9 Not only is Nozomi a great affordable weekday nosh place, it’s a pretty good watering hole as well. Even though wine is not a usual accompaniment to Japanese food, there’s a small but well-chosen wine list, with glasses an affordable $7 each. Beer and Japanese spirits is another story! There’s a good range of imported beers, including Suntory ‘The Premium Malt’s” (sic) and Yebisu, Japanese plum wine, Sake and Shochu (which is a must try) for reasonable prices.

Watch out for the specials board, including the Lunch Specials in three sizes from $9.90. Takeaway is also available.

Nozomi 8 ‘Nozomi’ means ‘hope’ in English we’re told, or ‘best always’. It’s certainly a bit of Japanese cheer for those who live in the Ashmore/Parkwood area and beyond! It could easily become one of your ‘go to’ dining haunts!
