Nobbys Arc, Nobby Beach

Nobbys Arc at Nobby Beach is the ultimate hangout for those wanting a casual night out.

You know, you want to spend time with your friends in a funky place but you’re feeling free and easy, don’t want to be tied down to a two or three course meal for a certain cost. You want to leave your options open, stay flexible…have a few drinks close to home, share some food with some mates, check out what’s going on…

Proprietor, Scott Imlach, has targeted Nobbys Arc perfectly for his market: locals who want a communal space around the corner with good food, funky atmosphere and fantastic service, bridging the gap between upmarket restaurants and coffee shops. His already successful ventures, which appeal to different clientele (Barchino, next door to ‘Arc’ and Freshly Stacked, in Broadbeach) have led him to this bold new venue. So where did the concept come from?

Nobbys Arc7 “I really got the idea from Bambi Deluxe in Melbourne,” Scott tells us. “People want to walk to a local venue instead of catching a cab,” he says, standing at the front door welcoming each customer. The locals greet him by name, exchanging pats on the back and a laugh as they enter. “They want to spend time with friends, eating as they go, chilling out.” Nobbys Arc is the place to do just that! It’s a cool night, even with the outdoor heaters, so we head inside to check out the even cooler vibe.

Transylvania and the adjoining cycle shop have been transformed into a multi-function space, each side with its own distinct ambience. A long studded leather fronted bar stretches out along the right hand wall. It’s a dark industrial-styled high-stooled area with hanging warehouse lights, the huge exposed copper piping overhead lending a steampunk, machinery edge. There’s a tide mark running down the length of the restaurant, the bar area shifting gear into a more sedate dining section, its white dropped sound insulated ceiling keeping the punchy bar music and darkness at bay. There’s a large happy crowd of mixed age groups, the busyness matched by the wait staff, who provide quick and efficient service.

Nobbys arc5 We sit for dinner after a long working day, beginning with a few tapas and then ordering mains to share. Our waitress, Tilly, is full of smiles and helpful advice, taking our drinks order, asking us a trivia question to fill the time and later delivering the prize! We share Grilled haloumi with butter burned lemon, Butterflied king prawns with garlic, chilli and wine; and delicious Pork belly with apple as tapas before sharing a Lamb and yoghurt pizza and King prawn pasta. We forego the cocktails and settle for tap beer and a glass of wine. On a warmer night, a Monteith pear cider, also on tap, would have hit the spot!

Nobbys arc6 It’s unpretentious comfort food, rustic and substantial, all made in house, much of it emerging from the large pizza oven or the grill at the end of the restaurant. We’ve over-ordered, so there’s no room for dessert – a house made tiramisu, dessert pizza or dessert calzone with chocolate and caramel…

Already, the locals in Nobbys have made ‘Arc’ their own, with the weekend and Sunday arvo live music sessions wildly popular. Somehow, at Nobbys Arc, it all fits together. With Jess managing the staff everything runs like a well oiled machine, it’s a welcoming mood-filled venue with lots of food and drink choices, a place close to home where you can go for a great night out, to spend time with friends, or maybe you’ll even meet somebody…

Update 2016: Scott Imlach no longer owns Nobbys Arc.
