Minnie Street Eatery

There’s a feeling of great curiosity and excitement when a new eatery opens in the local area. What will it be like? Will it have the food we enjoy and great coffee?

As those who pass through Minnie Street witness change afoot in their dilapidated corner store, there’s plenty of goodwill and wonder. It’s a top location in an under-serviced suburb, easy to get to with parking along the street.

Marie and Bill Malandris fell in love with the position and possibilities of the old corner building on the roundabout, and Minnie Street Eatery was born, the couple setting out to make the dream of running their own ‘urban eatery’ a reality.

The house was stripped and repainted, retro fitted with an open kitchen and brightly painted recycled furniture, the yard holding more recycled seating and a BBQ smoker. A huge ‘Day of the Dead’ street art mural by graffiti artist Jarrad Kelly @jrockenroller appeared on the side wall as the venue began to take shape.

When we visited, the venue was very much a work in progress, with more of a boho street feel rather than a polished café.

The choice of the very worthy ‘Voyager’, a four-bean blend from Social Espresso, will please many coffee lovers, the coffee smooth and velvety with great crema. A small cabinet shows off some cakes, biscuits and food to take away.

Besides the repurposing of the corner store, our greatest excitement comes from learning that the kitchen is home to talented chef Chris Norris.

Daily fare begins with breakfast from 7am, the short menu holding many hearty favourites, such as Eggs Bene and Avo and feta smash mixed in with some more interesting choices such as the Nasi G bowl and Mushroom medley. Lunch goes from healthy raw food superbowls, to BLT and burgers priced to go at $10 – $16.

It’s at dinner that we see Chef Chris’s true colours with a larger range of large and small plates to share. Ex-Baca di Bacco, Elston, Rocks on Broadbeach and PointBreak Bar & Grill, Chef Chris has devised a dinner menu of world street food suitable to share, complemented by a range of pizzas.

Our meal begins with a stone-cooked cob loaf, smoked and served with rosemary and a side of truffle butter. It’s followed by an array of street-style dishes: Lamb skewers with cured tapioca bark, Popcorn prawns, Satay chicken skewers in a peanut garden scattered with ice-dried mandarin, seeds and wild berry-infused fennel and Zucchini fries with house tzatziki. Larger plates include Seafood paella, a 1kg mussel pot and 18-hour Mallee root-smoked pork shoulder. Yummo!

Each dish is beautifully presented, flowing across the plate with the use of house-made sauces and oils, dehydrations and flowers to add flavour and interest. They are dishes displaying great culinary technique; plates we’d expect to see in a finer establishment, rather than being incongruent with their ‘street-wise’ surroundings.

But perhaps it’s this diversity that will be the winning factor; the fact that you can sit on a recycled bar stool at a cable reel table and enjoy such eclectic, artistically-presented plates of food one night, pizza and a Sunday barbecue with live music on another.

With plans for an outdoor bar and further seating around the side of the building, the venue is presently BYO pending licensing.

Minnie Street Eatery is well worth a visit. Dine in, dial for pickup, or delivery through Uber Eats, Marie and Bill with Chris’s help, are intent on providing great service to the local community, adding to Southport’s eclectic mix.

With a large 98-apartment development planned for across the street, we’re eager to see how this site develops.
