Koncubine Espresso Bar

It’s a balmy morning, basking in glorious Gold Coast weather at Koncubine in Chirn Park, more than slightly smug that today I’m on holidays as the working world passes by. So many times I’ve driven along this road, too rushed to stop, catching only a glimpse through the lush greenery at the relaxed diners and sippers beyond…but today I’m the one in the sun, ordering breakfast from the obliging staff.

Koncubine1 Once a tiny ‘hole in the wall’ coffee shop, Koncubine took its name by association, providing coffee for the Konc hair salon next door, only to firmly establish its own unique clientele and cement its identity as far more than an ‘add-on’. Since then, it’s doubled in space; transforming the adjacent florist shop into a cosy but funky eclectically furnished den with rich colours, gilt mirrors, and a choice of armchairs or scatter cushion lined benches.

Koncubine7 We choose to sit outside, soaking up the mid season sunshine, and are soon joined by the fearless Godzilla, a resident water dragon who sunbakes on the wall just behind my shoulder, patiently waiting for his breakfast. Despite the urban feel of the café, he’s right at home; a regular, just like the locals! And so we sit, lizards on a rock, separated from other diners by waist-high concrete bay booths, the space maximised by permanent wooden seating which forms part of the dining area, softened by foliage and shaded by large umbrellas.

Koncubine8 It’s busy for a weekday morning, with locals grabbing coffee to go, couples chatting as they wait for breakfast. The blackboard outlines the menu, with expected choices of fruit or bircher muesli; lots of egg choices (fried, poached, scrambled, Benedict) as well as vegetarian and different bread options; a choice of muffins, slices and cakes, some gluten-free, from a glass-fronted cabinet; freshly made smoothies; Merlo coffee and T2 teas. I look for the ‘hook’ – the unique dish that will make me come back to this particular café time after time – but no single menu item really leaps out at me. When the food arrives, though, it’s competent, generous and well-priced: doorstop bread with poached eggs and bacon with homemade tomato relish, accompanied by huge mugs of smooth creamy coffee – a great start to the morning. Next time we’ll try the Bruschetta Stack for something a bit different!

Koncubine4 Koncubine is far more classy than its name: it’s a spotlessly clean café, with young enthusiastic staff and smiling efficient service, serving good value freshly made food with catering and food to go options. Little wonder that it’s a favourite of locals, who are catered for with a loyalty card which gives each fifth coffee free. Koncubine is well worth the stop, especially if you live on the northern end of the coast.
