Hessian & Bean

‘Coffee cave’ is an apt description of Hessian & Bean Boutique Espresso in Palm Beach.

Entering the café on a hot summer’s day, there’s an impression of deep, dark and cool, even the shopfront shaded by a wide awning.

Inside, the décor gives a clear message: this is the home of passionate coffee lovers, a rustic café with hessian coffee bags on the wall, empty cups hanging from the ceiling, and Kim the barista working constantly to keep up with demand.

With its raw and earthy industrial vibe and Parov Stelar electro swing floating on the airwaves, it’s an inviting space to chill.

Owner, Sam Ladson is cool as well. A builder by trade with a clear vision of what he wants his cafe to be, Sam says that his people management roles and passion for good coffee have come together in the café, where most weeks he puts in 90 hours. From the outside, though, he looks quite relaxed.

“This is our own take on a coffee shop,” Sam tells us. “We’ve made all the furniture, counters, corrugated iron and timber feature walls, and sourced the hessian coffee bags, some from overseas.”

Of course, coffee is the underlay – the theme that ties the café together. It’s Seven Seeds coffee from Melbourne, the sweet caramelly tones of the special house blend gained by a mix of Ethiopian and Honduran beans.

“The coffee is roast to order, so it means we can pass on a fresh coffee to the customer every time,” Sam says. “At the moment, we’re the only Gold Coast café serving Seven Seeds. We had several trials of other coffees, but we’re sticking with Seven Seeds. They provide ‘farm to cup’ coffee by buying into their source coffee farms. There’s no middle man. They work with farmers to produce the best coffee possible, their service is also amazing, and their coffee is unique,” he adds.

Love the coffee? Seven Seeds beans are available for sale in the cafe as well as online through Hessian and Beans’ store.

There’s such a handle on the coffee that we wonder about the menu. Can it be as good?

We needn’t have worried. It’s as grounded as the coffee. Sourcing from local suppliers and making sauces in house as well as beetroot hummus, compotes and relishes, the menu is full of healthy options, none crossing the $20 line.

The menu is clearly marked with dietary preferences (V, VG, GF and DF), such as the Asian-style Buddha Bowl or the Superfood Salad, both of which at $16.90 are dangerously healthy for the price!

Yes, you can indulge in Smashed Avo, but it comes out ‘fancy’ with quinoa, sweet corn, tomato salsa, fresh organic mint and goat cheese, drizzled with hand crafted balsamic glaze on Burleigh Baker’s luscious sourdough. (At a sweet $14.50 it’s $5 cheaper than the price some ‘town’ cafés have to charge to cover rent)!

Besides the Avocado Fancy, other popular dishes include Haloumi and mushroom with free-range eggs, asparagus and wilted spinach ($16.90) and the Organic Acai Bowl ($13) with banana, muesli and paleo cacao granola, chia and seasonal fruits.

Keenly priced, the dishes we try are lusciously fresh, vibrant in colours and suitable for a range of diners and demographics. The fifteen options to ‘Pimp my plate’ build in choice at the right price. Burger options add a more traditional lunchtime element to the menu, while smoothies and juices add to the other coffee-centric drink options.

With friendly staff and quick table and kitchen service, this unpretentious café is a friendly reminder that sometimes you get a better deal in the ‘burbs. Diners sit at their table drinking coffee as they read the paper without pressure to ‘turn’ the table. Even a diner’s dog is brought a bowl of water. Now that’s service, and some!

After all, this is the coffee cave where you can not only hibernate away from the summer heat, but also away from the fast pace of city life.
