Genki Café, Palm Beach

UPDATE April 2013: Genki is now also open Friday nights for dinner, BYO. Lunch meals are still $15 and under, even the seafood dishes, so it’s great value dining! There’s often live music and a really chilled out vibe. Genki just keeps on getting better!

Try the High Tea, Genki style for $35 per person, available Thursday – Sunday. The High Tea menu can be negotiated with the chef, and bookings are essential.

Genki2 Genki, in Palm Beach, is a Japanese-inspired café which serves fresh nutritious food at very reasonable prices. It’s a local favourite for breakfast, lunch or just a cup of tea. ‘Genki’, Japanese for feeling good, healthy, full of zest and well being, has been serving local ‘palmies’ for years, but they keep its success a secret. Snuggled back behind the trees, it’s a bit hidden from travellers, who pass right on by.

You place your order at the counter for the Japanese chef to prepare. Breakfasts such as Eggs Benedict or Vegetable sauté range from $7 to $12. There’s a lunch special, usually of fish, chicken or beef ($8.80) which changes daily. Today it’s Sautéed prawns with stir-fried green beans, asparagus, snow peas and spinach, served with rice. Other choices include Japanese style curry served with steamed rice ($11), Thai beef salad ($12) or Tofu and pumpkin salad ($12) as well as a few western-style options. All food is made from fresh local produce, free range eggs and hormone free meats. There are both vegan and vegetarian options. Service is prompt, making it an easy work lunch option. There’s plenty of seating outside in the morning sun or under the shady trees at lunchtime, or on a more private platform area of the restaurant, secluded behind a screen of plants.

Genki1 The drinks menu gives almost as much choice as does food. There is the usual range of Merlo coffee, but that’s where ‘usual’ stops. Juices and Frappulicious choices ($6) include Mango, guava and lychee; Pomegranate and raspberry; or Blood orange, guarana and ginseng. And then there are the specialty teas, such as Japanese quince and Black magic. Where else are the ingredients echinacea, elder flowers, rosehip, lime blossom, passionflower, fennel, aniseed myrtle, and liquorice root commonplace on the menu!

This is a great little café serving wholesome Asian-inspired food, also offering catering, from sushi platters to full events. No wonder the locals want to keep it to themselves!

Great little spot with a Bryon Bay alternative atmosphere that Palm Beach needs badly, 2 levels great couches,wi fi access, great coffee, interesting mix of coffee worshippers, very clean toilets, however tables not cleared promptly and dirty dishes lying around that attracts flies. I found myself swatting more than eating, – the waitresses’ black aprons needed some laundering splotchy all over with yesterdays’s cooking all over it. Bit of a turn off when I gazed up from my lovely veg slices. Are clean black aprons in short supply? Not a good look … Waitresses with attitude – Tempting blueberry muffins on the counter displayed but not covered, exposed to open air. Nearly bought one then thought better … Not a place for a germ freak…

Thanks for this comment, Sandrine. Hygiene and presentation are two of my pet food issues. Diners need to feel welcome, comfortable, safe, and enticed not only by the food, but also by the atmosphere of the restaurant. Like you, I fail to see why tables can’t be cleaned of dirty dishes as waitresses walk back to the kitchen, why dirty aprons can’t be changed, or dishcloths taken out of food display areas! Like many diners, I refuse to be seated outside a toilet door, in a dirty area or next to a table filled with dirty dishes. We all deserve better! Come on Gold Coast – let’s clean up the act!
