Finders Keepers Bar

It was the secret hideaway loved by many on the Gold Coast. No grass on the ceiling, no backwards clock or teacup chandelier, but there was more than a touch of mystique to Finders Keepers, a vintage dining room and quirky bar all rolled into one. Finders Keepers! Find the key, and the secret was yours!

Now the secret is no longer hidden. Finders Keepers has come out onto the street, bringing new life to the upper end of James Street.

finders-keepers-18 New owners Genna Raber and Max Deichler have swept through the venue to add their own modern touch. Gone is the magnolia wallpaper and leadlight bay windows, the Alice in Wonderland upside down bookcase and the sense of quirkiness. In their place is a revamped bar, an open kitchen and, most significant of all, the front of the restaurant has been opened up to show off the new, bright remodelled space.

A new menu has unfolded as well. Increasing trading hours to include breakfast and lunch on the weekend, the guys have taken full advantage of their location on trendy James Street.

finders-keepers-15 “It’s a blessing to find a location on James Street, which has a vibrancy like no other. Our aim is to create a restaurant that could easily transform from sunrise to sunset,” says Max, who’s also a co-owner of Little Mermaid. Its theme ‘Your home away from home’, could also apply to Finders Keepers; a place which people experience and want to return to, a lazy breakfast turning into a long lunch in a venue they’ll revisit for cocktails later in the evening.

There’s a great choice for breakfast, with some cracker dishes on offer from Chef Johnny Perri. Poached eggs, served on a Venezuelan corn cake (similar to an arepa dough), and the sensational Ricotta and turmeric pancakes with activated organic chia topped with a black pepper ice cream and maple syrup are two which take our fancy, the menu including GC favourites such as Avocado on organic sourdough as well.

The coffee accompanying our breakfast is Finders Keepers’ own blend of Papua New Guinean and Venezuelan beans, made for them by Kiva Han. Its rich hazelnut and cocoa notes form a smooth timeless combination.

finders-keepers-12 Some of the breakfast dishes arc over into the lunch menu, joined by sliders, NZ clam and corn fritter, an Ancient grain salad with Persian feta and pomegranate dressing, Middle Eastern slow-cooked lamb, and an Octopus and bean salad. Most intriguing in an interesting menu is Duck foie gras parfait, the foie gras encased in lychee with moscato jelly, pine nut candy, garnished with pickled walnut – a tapas style taste sensation to share as a starter.

finders-keepers-10 Finders Keepers is the perfect venue to grab supper and cocktails in the evening. The extended wine list, while mostly Australian in origin, also includes a well-chosen selection from New Zealand, Spain, Greece, Italy and France, with a couple of beers on tap including their own branded lager.

On Saturday, Finders Keepers offers brunch from 11am. Laze back through the sunny morning and come out for brunch. Guests have the option of choosing an indulgent brunch banquet complete with a matching cocktail, or an a la carte menu.

With brunch items including chestnut and strawberry ‘wonuts’ with macerated strawberries, vanilla bean ice cream, balsamic reduction and hazelnut candy, accompanied by an Orange sherbet mimosa, you can slip easily into the weekend. Domaine Chandon is also on offer for brunch.

From 8pm on Saturday, ‘Finders-Up-Late’ cocktail hour gets into full swing, as special guest DJ from Sydney “RHYME” cranks up the music. Drink-Dine-Dance steps up the social aspect of the venue even more.

finders-keepers-14 “We want people to come in and share a couple of dishes and a glass of wine,” Max says, “to experience the entertainment and the European vibe, the food, quality of service and the atmosphere.”

finders-keepers-19 From a bright and breezy breakfast with a touch of difference, through a Mediterranean-inspired lunch, an intimate chat over a glass or two on the Chesterfield lounge, to date or dance night, Finders Keepers Bar and Dining has sprung into new life with something for everyone.
