Elk Espresso

NOTE 2018: Elk has now moved to the beach end of Oasis Shopping Centre, Broadbeach. We look forward to bringing you an updated review.

Elk Espresso wins friends, first of all, for being a world away from the stainless steel cafes of Broadbeach. Once a quite unremarkable shop, there’s now a minimalist shopfront adorned by antlers. Step into the simple but funky interior and you could be excused for thinking it’s an art studio. There are retro chairs and tables on the sanded concrete floor, overseen by the stencil of a giant elk standing in splendour on the limed wall. There’s a rough but timeless elegance to the fitout that says ‘I dare to be different’.

P1030869 Opened in mid 2011, Elk has taken the neighbourhood by storm and can be very busy. Serving T2 teas and Single O and Killerbee blends from Single Origin Roasters, the barista’s running hot with coffees to drink in and takeaway. A range of clientele frequents the cafe, from teens and young families to retirees. Everyone is happy, whether inside the café reading the paper or at tables spilling out onto the pavement, relaxing in the morning sunshine. There’s a bright beach holiday feel to the place, as though the working world is far away.

Elk 5B Elk 11B The well-chosen, eclectic menu is rustic and retro with a modern twist; one of the best daytime menus we’ve seen.

IMG_2724 Changing with the seasons, some brekkie standouts when we visited included Blueberry and coconut breakfast panna cotta with granola, summer fruits and cinnamon yoghurt (there’s also a completely GF DF panna cotta available), as well as the Brekkie Tacos.

Elk 4B Lunch dishes skirt around the world, picking up bold flavours along the way. Jalapeno, lime, pickled peppers and harissa add an edge to Middle Eastern staples such as labneh, dukkah and hummus. Expect scrumptious salads and hearty burgers filled with unexpected combinations of on trend ingredients such as pearl barley, fennel, hazelnuts and wild rice. Leave room, if you can, for a House Special drink – they’re simply wicked!

IMG_0758 Whether you stop in for an early morning breakfast, leisurely lunch or a decadent afternoon tea, Elk has a welcoming charisma all its own, calling you off the beach to the fern forest beyond.

First off,CHEF I KNOW ITS A LAID BACK LIFESTYLE IN BROADBEACH YADADADADA,BUT Did you have Microwave cup tray poach my eggs?? Its not dirt cheap and they come in these perfect semi circles like i used to pach when i was a kid??? I am sick to death of Qld breakfast joints not taking a few minutes to properly pach my eggs,Then the next suprise,They are clear goop inside! ,Oh then the next the butter they serve is frozen solid, now i have to wait to eat my liquified eggs even longer,,,PROPS to the coffee lady,AMAZING coffe,,but both me and my gals breakfast was atrotious, all the nice reviews obviouslt written by the dozens of local friends that seem to be popping every few minutes,I hate leaving a restaurant angry and leaving half my food on the plate,Stop being lazy chef and get with the program! eggs dont belong in a microwave!!!!

Agree about the poaching cups, but the eggs may still have been steamed not microwaved. born2eat
