Cha Cha Japanese

Cha Cha in Broadbeach is our other dining room. There’s a saying in our house, ‘Let’s eat at Jack’s tonight.’ We’re talking about Jack and Maiko Suzue’s restaurant ‘Cha Cha’. It’s our home away from home, not in the ‘dress up, let’s celebrate’ sort of way, more like the place we can rely on to get a tasty quick meal that’s good for us. And of course there’s the cheerful banter with Jack that accompanies the experience.

We’re the locals, and this is our place, but we’re not alone in our devotion. Many nights Cha Cha is full of mixed age family gatherings or the 20-somethings who want to meet for a meal or start a party before they move on to late night venues. In fact the restaurant has become so popular that it has consumed two shop spaces rather than one, the second kitchen expanding the menu to a delicious choice of ramen.

If you are new to Japanese food, Cha Cha provides a great introduction. There are many choices, with the menu divided into sections of entree, types of meat (chicken, pork, steak, seafood), vegetables, noodles and ramen. There’s so much choice, from familiar dishes such as Teriyaki, through to eel, octopus and cuttlefish. Food is all freshly made to order, but surprisingly prompt in delivery. And make sure you try the Japanese roasted wheat tea with your meal. There’s also a bottle shop just down the road and BYO is only $1 per person.

We have our favourite dishes, which we order time and again. If we’re in a larger group we may begin with some entrees: Agedashi tofu (a generous serve of six pieces in Japanese wine sauce), Takoyaki served with BBQ sauce or Ginger Chicken (all $6.90) or even Red oil steamed gyoza. For mains, we find it hard to beat the Fillet Steak with salad or as a ‘Don’ meal with vegetable tempura and rice, Japanese style with seafood, ginger, lime, teppan, garlic butter or wasabi ($19 – $20.80). Other friends always order either chicken ($12.90) or seafood ($13.90 – $16.90). There is really authentic ramen on offer as well as the Chinese influenced Fish Mala Tan ($19.90). Vegetarians have lots of dishes to choose from as well.

Cha Cha is not hard to find in the low strip of shops directly opposite the Gold Coast Convention Centre. Finding a table may be a much harder task, especially on Friday or Saturday nights, so it’s advisable to book ahead. The ‘no fuss’ diner experience only adds to Cha Cha’s popularity. What it lacks in dining finesse, Cha Cha makes up for with genuine friendly hospitality and honest, affordable yet flavoursome Japanese food.

Cha Cha also open for lunch Tuesday to Sunday from 12 noon – 3pm. Enjoy a bowl of ramen or udon, sashimi don, curry or Donburi. Prices  range from $9.90 to $14.90 and the serves are generous.
