Café Ambiente, Kirra

Overlooking the famous Kirra beach, Café Ambiente is the perfect spot for breakfast or lunch. We’re on our way to the airport with time to kill on a sparklingly perfect winter’s day, so we stop to relax and check out how Ambiente’s faring under new owners.

Situated under the 5 star resort, Nirvana on the Sea, the cafe’s expansive and open, with a choice of dining inside, al fresco out the front, or on high stools overlooking the beach.

Ambiente 1B We’re greeted warmly, with drink and food orders taken promptly. It’s relaxed and unhurried, a quiet place during the week, breezes wafting in from the ocean, and the thought drifts by that this strip of Kirra would be a great place to chill out on any late afternoon…

Breakfast arrives and it looks amazing! The generous portions are spread out across rectangular platters, sauces deftly complementing the main fare, adding detail and taste. The two halves of the Toasted tortilla are joined at the hip showing off their contents proudly; the Vegetarian Big Brekky is a gourmet taste plate of delights – spinach, mushrooms, avocado and haloumi to name a few, the vege fritter the only letdown on the plate. Drinks to accompany our meal are a smooth and creamy Elixir flat white and a berry shake. We note the internationally influenced menu: Brekky bruschetta; Buttermilk pancakes with strawberries, banana and maple syrup; Chipolatas with tomato ragout; Lamb’s Fry with reduced demiglaze… This is a menu with many interesting standout dishes that demand a return visit. With most breakfasts priced at $9 – $16, and the Big Brekky (meat or vegetarian) romping in at $18, it’s also great value.

Ambiente 2 Note to self: The lunch menu also looks amazing, and judging by the presentation of breakfast dishes, we’d be in for a treat! Menu items include Double roasted duck with boy choy, creamy mash and orange star anise glaze; Asian spiced pork belly with Asian slaw and warm apple sauce; Macadamia and sesame seed calamari with rocket and orange.

The weekly specials board deserves a mention too, with menu items such as Black Tasmanian Mussels with light chilli, spinach and coconut broth served with toasted sour dough; Warm lamb salad; Fresh king prawns; or Osso Bucco slow roasted with vine ripened tomatoes, oregano and creamy mash.

Ambiente 3Gary O’Brien, the Manager, tells us that the cafe will be opening for evening events in summer, and they’re also available for catering.

With top quality food made freshly to order and exceptional presentation, together with a top location overlooking the beach, Café Ambiente is a winner.

Great spot to frequent when an airport drop off or pick up required! Breakfast yesterday was impressive, the location a little noisy on the road and service satisfactory but the food was standout. My visitor from Melbourne claimed the Eggs Benedict had the best Hollandaise sauce she had ever tasted with its balance of herbs and told a very young chef this much to his delight!
