Burleigh Social

‘When you open your doors, it will be two years until you’ve really established yourself and started making a profit.’

That used to be the common advice for new business owners; that was until the advent of social media!

Burleigh Social 1-001 After years in the Hospitality industry, including establishing eateries for other people, Jarrod Barnett, together with business partner Kane Gibson, had clear ideas about Hospitality and the role that coffee culture and eateries play in community relations. Hence the name of their new venue: Burleigh Social.

Burleigh Social’s style is indicative of changes sweeping the Gold Coast dining scene. As confidence grows, operators are breaking capital city preconceptions about coffee shops in favour of core essentials: great coffee, daytime dining, health-oriented wholefood menus, with new add-ons such as collaborative night time popups, casual outdoor seating, relationship between operators and clients – developing a community hub and meeting place which extends beyond the physical space to cyberspace.

“We took part in a ‘billycart in a bathtub’ race soon after opening, and our fame spread from there. It was a great start,” Jarrod tells us. “Social media is amazing. We’ve been busy since we opened.”

Burleigh Social 3 Like many cafés, Burleigh Social began with coffee: a smooth Allpress with firm overtones of caramel. It’s a great blend with a wide appeal, a factor in the strong following of locals who stop in for a chat.

The guys’ original fare was made to go: Chia share cups loaded with berries, Greek yoghurt and coconut; biscuits and treats; Nutella muffins, and the house famous creation – the ‘Muffin in a cup’ (an ideal takeaway)!

Burleigh Social 2 Within a few months, they’ve doubled their premises, expanded their menu, and are regularly open for a weekly dinner and Sunday sessions.

Thursday nights feature a popup with fairy lights winking under the stars, gourmet hot dogs from a van, sliders and burgers, old school milkshakes and desserts on offer.

Burleigh Social 6 “Now we’ve taken over the rest of the shed to give cover from wind and rain. You can see straight past the the cabinet of treats into the open kitchen where we’re cooking up a whole new menu. We’ve expanded to full meals,” says Jarrod, dishing up our Avocado and dukkah smash and Pulled pork burger with slaw.

As he talks, I can feel an openness, an adaptability to change that’s essential to the café’s success: get the coffee base right, offer welcoming knowledgeable service, build slowly as you feel your way with the clientele, expand as the opportunity arises…

Burleigh Social 9 The end result is a café loved by other restaurateurs, a retreat for clientele of all ages, a new generation venue which exemplifies our laid back easy-going lifestyle. Wander in off the beach, walk your dog around the corner, hang out and read the paper or use our wifi…Whatever! This is your place in the sun.

No wonder Burleigh Social’s hit the sweet spot with locals…

…and so much for the two year theory!
