Borough Barista

Borough is the first coffee shop in sight as you leave Burleigh Beach. As you head off the beach thirsting for a refreshing freshly squeezed juice or smoothie, or maybe that extra smooth coffee hit first thing in the morning, Borough appears mirage-like just across the road. There had been a food outlet in this spot for years, but Borough is a godsend!

Borough4 This tiny hole-in-the-wall café, another of Dean Hyland’s successful ventures, is a favourite of locals, beach-goers and bicycle riders who enjoy healthy fresh food and juices and great coffee. Like its sister, Barefoot Barista in Palm Beach, there’s a rough hewn timber outdoor feel to this place, kind of earthy industrial but comfortable. There are no real table settings; just a few bench seats and stools to sit on. Bicycles are leaned against nearby fences, towels slung over the shoulders of bikini clad customers as they grab a drink and a quick bite to eat.

The raw ingredients for your order adorn the café: racks of whole fresh pineapples and apples nestle in crates above the workbench; knobs of ginger, fresh herbs and luscious bunches of truss tomatoes sit on the top of display cabinets, looking good enough to eat right then and there! The menu features all day breakfast choices including homemade bircher muesli ($6.50), summer fruit salad ($8.50), with all breakfast choices $11 and under. The Organic truss tomatoes on display are served with Meredith goat cheese (yum!), drizzled with olive oil and topped with fresh herbs on sourdough ($8.50) – the best fresh ingredients, simply prepared. Gluten-free options are also available.

Borough1 Borough burgers, too, are a standout option to satisfy the appetite after a morning on the beach. Available from 10am, they range in price from $10 – $16.50, with lots of choice of fillings for the crusty rolls: homemade aioli or chutney, along with chorizo, avocado, char-grilled peppers, meat patties and crunchy salad ingredients.

Borough is so small, in fact, that a major focus of the cafe is takeaway, rather than sit in and linger: takeaway Campos coffee (which, by the way, is excellent), takeaway delicious burgers on their own trays, takeaway cake…and just across the road is the park and beach, where you can sit and enjoy your food with a superb view. Great food, fresh juice, smooth coffee, with the best front yard in Australia!
