Bin 12, Burleigh Heads

It’s a Monday night, and strolling through Burleigh it’s all but dead. There have been a spate of restaurant openings lately in Burleigh, giving rise to its name ‘The new Tedder Avenue’, but on Mondays it resorts to the sleepy hollow of my youth where the most action in town is happening up at the lookout!

Fortunately, Bin 12 is open, a sexy little bar come restaurant squeezed alley-like into the middle of James Street. Dark wood, warm orange-sponged walls and original paintings give the venue an intimate warm glow, and the welcome we receive from wait staff makes us feel right at home. Monday night is a nod to locals and industry that this is their night. It’s Happy Hour all night long, relaxed and cheery, and we could not be happier! There are $5 wine and beer choices and even a $10 cocktail, taken from an extensive list of boutique wines, beers (including several on tap) and exotic cocktails promising anything from a ‘First Taste of Love’ to ‘Deep Passion’!

Bin 12_11 Bin 12 is the latest venture of Daniel Ridgeway, owner chef of hatted restaurant Little Truffle. Bin 12’s charming Restaurant Manager, Mara Ruggles (“Ruggie”, as she prefers to be known) tells us that Ridgeway wanted to create the sort of place he’d like to go to on his days off: an informal, relaxed venue with high quality share dishes and well-priced drinks. True to form, Ridgeway is there on the night we dine. He joins celebrated Kiwi chef Regan Porteous in the kitchen, before quietly slipping away.

Securing Porteous as chef is a real coup. Recently Executive Chef at the sensational Toko, in Sydney’s Surry Hills, Porteous draws his inspiration from world cuisine, from his exacting training under Gordon Ramsay, but perhaps even more so from the Eastern-influenced Rainer Becker, under whom he worked at Zuma in London.

Bin 12_4 “Exciting, addictive, …creative…”; these adjectives have been used previously to describe Porteous’ food, but they could equally apply to Bin 12’s menu. It’s an intriguing blend of East and West, sourced from the street food of both old and new worlds. Bin 12_7 Izakaya-style Japanese bar food sits side by side with Spanish and Italian tapas on a menu of different sized share plates ranging from $8 to $17. There’s even a quick flick across to the Americas, with Southern fried chicken, Mac and cheese, and Chorizo corn dog on the menu!

But just because it’s street food, don’t think Bin 12’s food is ordinary! Using classical techniques and creative flair, the two inspired chefs have given each dish a makeover, making Bin 12’s menu perfect grazing fare for foodies. We tuck into White fish sashimi with pickled onion and citrus vinegar; Fried jamon and mozzarella balls with citrus aioli; Sticky soy pork belly with mustard apple pickle; Kingfish Crudo with pork dust, lemon and olive oil; and Chilli and garlic glazed pork ribs. Washed down with a couple of wines, it’s delicious food, ideal to share, melting into the night.

Bin 12_9 So much so that it’s surprising, given the extraordinary talent of both Ridgeway and Porteous, that so little fanfare accompanied the opening of Bin 12. Like Little Truffle, it’s as though it’s slid in to home base before we realise what a gem we have amongst our midst. Frankly, after our night at Bin 12, we wouldn’t care if it was the only venue open in town on a Monday night; it’s a little treasure!
