Aussie China Kitchen, Broadbeach

In a handy spot opposite the casino in Broadbeach, Aussie China Kitchen is one of our favourite places on the Gold Coast to enjoy yum cha. By tradition, many dim sum restaurants are closed in airless spaces, surrounded by rich gold and red colours. Few seem to have adapted to the Gold Coast’s climate and ambience. As the name of this restaurant indicates, Aussie China Kitchen is one of the notable exceptions.

Located on the ground floor of the Meriton apartments in Broadbeach, patrons have a choice of seating in the restaurant itself, in the function room for larger groups, or our preference – out on the verandah in either sun or shade, depending on the season. On cooler days we sit inside, admiring the King Crabs and lobsters who, thanks to our preference for yum cha, will live another day.

Aussie China Kitchen5 We are greeted by Sam, who knows us as regulars, and promptly orders our tea. It’s friendlier, less brusque service than most dim sum experiences, and we can sit for hours chatting, taking dishes from the trolleys or ordering from the menu. We’ve parked under the building with three hours’ free parking and dine in peace, not hassled by wait staff. Some stop for a chat and we greet other regulars who also use this restaurant for a weekend family lunch.

Steamed dishes chosen from the trolley, on fried dishes brought on trays, are fresh from the kitchen, steaming or crisp and hot, too good to pass up. It’s staple dim sum fare of a consistently high quality, including soft rice skin covered seafood dumplings with coriander, crunchy salt and pepper calamari, tasty Shanghai dumplings, crisp aerated taro pastry puffs, rich crackling topped roast pork, succulent BBQ duck, delicate short crusted flaky egg tart or silky coconut jelly which melts in your mouth.

Aussie China Kitchen1 Aussie China Kitchen provides a modern Cantonese dim sum experience, while retaining some traditional elements.

Please do not go to this place! We had dinner there tonight and the food is hugely overpriced for the quality(our mixed vege dish was made up mostly of fibrous stalks which one would normally dispose of), the service was non-existent (we had to frequently hail the waitresses even though it was not busy), and finally our fish was overcooked. We really regretted dining out there and will never go there again.

DO NOT GO TO THIS RESTAURANT, not only is the food overpriced, the waitresses looked like they worked for more than 20 hrs, even though there was only 3 tables of customers.

I repeat, do not go, it is not worth it.
